GREENVILLE — East Carolina has added even more international flavor to its roster while shoring up the depth along its front line with its latest basketball recruit.

Garth Grindley, a 6-8, 250-pound power forward from Westmoreland, Jamaica, has transferred to East Carolina, Pirate Head Coach Bill Herrion announced on Thursday.

He joins a roster which was already dotted with the names of players from around the globe. Junior forward Gabriel Mikulas is from Argentina, sophomore post player Moussa Badiane hails from France and incoming junior college transfer Luke Mackay is a native of Australia.

Grindley spent the last two seasons at Monroe College in the Bronx, N.Y. As a sophomore last season, he averaged 10.0 points, six rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game. He also recorded three double-doubles during the season and helped the Mustangs advance to the championship game of the Region XV Tournament.

"Garth is a very physical player who possesses a strong upper body," said Herrion. "Due to the unfortunate injury to Jason Herring, we needed to get another body to add more depth to our frontcourt. The two things that I liked about him the most are that he's physical and he competes hard. He really adds depth to our frontcourt."

Grindley was also an outstanding student at Monroe College, carrying a 3.5 grade point average. He has enrolled at ECU and is eligible for competition during the 2002-03 season. He is the fifth member of ECU's recruiting class of 2002 and its third junior college transfer.
