Super
Regional pairings finalized
Texas is heading to the super regionals in an
enviable position: as the No. 1 national seed with home-field advantage.
The Longhorns (53-13), making their third straight super regional
appearance, will host Vanderbilt (45-17) on Friday in one of eight
best-of-three super regionals.
The host sites — all on campus fields — were announced late Sunday night by
the NCAA's Division I baseball committee and the pairings were set in stone
Monday with the conclusion of the weather-delayed Kinston Regional.
Texas is looking to reach the College World Series for the 31st time to
extend its NCAA record. Meanwhile, Vanderbilt is going for its first
appearance in Omaha.
The Commodores, a No. 2 seed in their regional, advanced with a victory over
Virginia, the host and top seed.
The four Friday sites and pairings are:
- Vanderbilt (45-17) at Texas (53-13).
- Florida State (45-21) at Arkansas (43-22).
- Arizona (33-24-1) at Long Beach State (39-19).
- Georgia (41-21) at Georgia Tech (44-19).
Saturday's first-day Super Regional action will
feature host South Carolina (48-15) and East Carolina (51-11), which
advanced by beating North Carolina-Wilmington on Monday in a rain-extended
regional.
The four Saturday sites and pairings are:
- East Carolina (51-11) at South Carolina
(48-15).
- Tulane (41-19) at Cal State Fullerton (40-21).
- Texas A&M (42-20) at Louisiana State (44-17).
- Florida (43-20) at Miami (47-11).
The eight winners of the super regionals will play
in the College World Series, which begins June 18 in Omaha, Neb.
Times, TV plans set for Columbia Super Regional
COLUMBIA - Game times for this weekend's NCAA
Baseball Super Regional in Columbia have been set by the NCAA and ESPN
television, South Carolina's athletics department announced Monday on its
official website.
South Carolina (48-15), the host school, will square
off against East Carolina (51-11) on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12
noon at Sarge Frye Field. ESPN will televise both games nationally.
If a third game is needed on Monday, game time will
either be 1 p.m. or 7 p.m. and will be broadcast by either ESPN or ESPN2.
All tickets have been sold for the Columbia Super Regional.
This marks South Carolina's fifth straight
appearance in an NCAA Super Regional. East Carolina, which is in the
postseason for the sixth consecutive year, is making its second showing in a
Super Regional.
USC leads the all-time series against ECU 11-4. The
two teams first met in 1958 and last faced one another in 2003, when
Carolina won 4-0 in an NCAA Regional game at Atlanta.
College Baseball Polls
Following are the top 25 teams in the
Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball polls, with records through June 7 and previous rankings.
The Baseball America poll is voted on by the publication's staff. The
