Football, which draws more than its share of attention at East Carolina University each fall, will be sharing the spotlight with another strategic program when the 2004-05 academic year kicks off.

ECU plans to enroll about 30 students in its new engineering program when classes begin in August, with a goal of expanding admittance to the recently approved academic regimen to about 100 students each year within the next few years.

Some of the details surrounding the debut of the engineering program were unveiled in a Monday press release from the ECU News Bureau.

Dr. Ralph Rogers, dean of the College of Technology and Computer Science, which will be the home of the new program, said admission will be competitive and graduates will be prepared "to survive, thrive and lead in the 21st century global economy.

"We will have an environment to prepare students for the world they will encounter when the graduate," Rogers said.

Earlier this month, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors approved the new bachelor's degree in general engineering with a concentration in systems engineering. It will be the first engineering program in North Carolina east of Interstate 95 and the only systems engineering concentration in the state.

Holtz a casualty in Gamecocks' scrimmage

COLUMBIA — Coach Lou Holtz vowed to become more involved next season in South Carolina's offense, but nobody expected him to break a leg doing it.

Holtz sustained a hairline fracture to his lower left leg Saturday while watching the offense practice goal-line situations, the university said Monday.

Holtz was crouched down when running back Cory Boyd inadvertently knocked him over.

The 67-year-old coach jumped right back up and continued practice, but later learned the extent of his injury. The tibia doesn't bear weight, however, so Holtz and his sore leg were back on the practice field Sunday.

Big Dance still fueling CBS ratings bonanza

NEW YORK — CBS Sports' telecasts of the first eight days of the NCAA tournament are up 29 percent from last year.

The national average is a 5.8 rating and a 13 share, up from 4.5 and 9 in 2003.

The second broadcast window during the network's coverage Sunday of the regional finals earned the highest ratings in that time slot since 1999. The window (5:10-7:29 p.m. EST), highlighted by Duke defeating Xavier, earned an 8.6 and an 18. That represents a 28 percent increase from the 6.7 and 13 of a year ago.

The rating is the percentage of all homes with TVs, whether or not they are in use. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given program.

Saint Joe's coach honored with Naismith Award

ATLANTA — Saint Joseph's Phil Martelli and Tennessee's Pat Summitt were honored Monday as the Naismith College Basketball Coaches of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

The awards are named in honor of the inventor of basketball, Dr. James Naismith.

Last week, Saint Joseph's point guard Jameer Nelson was selected the Naismith College Player of the Year, along with Diana Taurasi of Connecticut, who won for the second year in a row.
