East Carolina men’s basketball coach Bill Herrion and
women’s basketball coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener each had pay raises and
contract extensions approved by the school's board of trustees on
Friday. The contract modifications had been proposed by ECU athletics
director Mike Hamrick.
Chancellor William Muse said the board discussed
Hamrick’s job performance in closed session but no extension or other changes were made in
his contract, which runs to July 1, 2005 at an annual salary of $180,000
plus bonuses.
Hamrick's contract was also not extended when it came up
for review a year ago.
The trustees met in Harvey Hall of the Murphy Center and
approved one-year contract extensions for both Pirates basketball
coaches. Herrion’s contract now runs through April 1, 2007, and Baldwin-Tener’s
through April 1, 2006.
Herrion’s base salary of $150,000 annually will be
maintained but his compensation for radio and television production will
increase from $10,000 to $50,000 each year.
Herrion also had a buyout clause added which requires
him to pay ECU $300,000 if he leaves to accept another coaching position
before the first regular season game of the 2004-05 season. In addition,
a provision was added to Herrion’s contract that should he be terminated
the amount of salary remaining on his contract from ECU would be reduced
by the amount he earned elsewhere.
Baldwin-Tener received a $5,000 raise in base salary,
putting her at $90,000 annually.
